A handmade embroidery conference was held in Hinggan League, Inner Mongolia, on Thursday to showcase more than 500 embroidery works of 17 different styles from all over China.

Bai Yugang, head of the publicity department of the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, speaking at the opening ceremony, said that, since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, Inner Mongolia had vigorously developed its handmade embroidery industry, effectively promoting poverty alleviation and rural revitalization while ensuring the inheritance of the intangible cultural heritage.

The China Handmade Embroidery Inheritance & Innovation Conference, which opened in Ulanhot of the Hinggan League, displayed outstanding works covering 17 embroidery styles such as those of Mongolia, Hunan and Sichuan provinces and Suzhou city.

The organizers said the two-day event was designed to showcase the traditional cultural connotations of Chinese handmade embroidery through exhibitions, high-level dialogues, inspections and seminars, highlighting the value of embroidery to the times. The local government also hoped promotion of Mongolian embroidery could help fight poverty and play an important role in rural revitalization, as well as creating a cultural brand for the "grassland Silk Road."

At the opening ceremony, Horqin Right Middle Banner was named "China Hand-made Embroidery Innovation and Entrepreneurship Demonstration Base" by the China National Textile and Apparel Council and "Hometown for China's Mongolian Embroidery Culture" by the China Folk Literature and Art Association.

The banner, an administrative division corresponding to county level in Inner Mongolia, will also work with 12 colleges to establish practice bases and centers for innovation and modern designing of Mongolian embroidery.

Yang Jichao, vice-president of the China National Textile and Apparel Council, said Chinese embroidery was a jewel of intangible cultural heritage. It was an important part of the traditional crafts of textile and clothing, and an important link to promote the integration and development of traditional crafts, the modern fashion industry and cultural creative industries.

Up to now, there have been more than 30 kinds of embroidery styles included in the four national intangible cultural heritage programs published so far in China. The embroidery industry currently covers 173 administrative villages in Horqin Right Middle Banner. The number of participating workers is 21,000, including 2,895 people struggling with poverty. In 2018, the poverty-stricken people each earned more than 2,000-yuan extra money from doing embroidery.

Wang Jinlian is a typical case. She told China.org.cn that, in 2012 her husband's car accident ruined the family life. Faced with his expensive treatment costs and tuition fees for two children, her family was included in the list of poverty-stricken households in 2016.

However, in 2017 Wang started doing embroidery, which had saved her family and, now, the work could earn her an extra 10,000 yuan every year. After her family escaped from their dire situation, she also helped another 104 women to learn embroidery because she believed she could lead them out of poverty.

At the embroidery conference, a Mongolian embroidery enterprise of Horqin Right Middle Banner signed deals with seven textile and apparel companies covering product orders worth a total of 64 million yuan ($9.23 million).
